For our final project in the Design, Innovation, and Creativity course, my team was asked find a way to build confidence in young readers. Following the need-finding, brainstorming, and prototyping workflow, we developed a brand geared towards both kids and parents to encourage family-led literacy.
The demographic of families we were listening to found it difficult to find the time or resources to read to their children. As such, it became important to find free and low-cost solutions. During our brainstorming, one idea stood out to us: having families build their own stories.
Using their own creativity, kids were more likely to want to write or draw their stories to read out loud. They were proud of their work, and families were able to support them by helping them develop ideas.
Part of reading confidence is handwriting and writing skills, and it was important to have a solution incorporating these needs.
Bright notebooks were popular during prototyping, and resulted in pages filled with lots of ideas and imagination. The children were thrilled to be able to write their own stories, and parents were happy they would help without additional time or money stress.
We also tested branding a reading room at a nearby library, and the signs drew many families in. Most young readers were excited to be given a space to read aloud without feeling too disruptive in the general library environment.
